Lenovo Ideapad S12 Review

Lenovo have made some pretty popular netbooks, in particular the Lenovo IdeaPad S9e, which is an 8.9 inch netbook and very cheap at less than £200. However they have since launched a much larger netbook, a 12 inch, called the Lenovo Ideapad S12. This is the largest netbook currently available from Lenovo.

The S12 Lenovo measures just 28.9mm at its thickest point, so it is quite thin. It has a glossy cover, but this itself has an imprinted pattern on it. Colour options include white or black, and the black looks fantastic. The screen is a good 12 inches which makes wathching videos etc., very comfortable. One great point of the S12 Ideapad is that the keyboard is a full laptop size, so there will be no complaints of having to get used to it. The keys are solid and there is little flex in them, which signals a good build quality.
Internal specs are pretty standard with 1GB RAM and 160GB Storage, and it will come with Microsoft XP Home. The S12 will be available with a standard Intel Atom processor, but for $50 (£25) more you could get it with the Navidia Ion chipset. This is the first netbook to come with the Ion processor, which is basically an Intel Atom combined with a decent Nvidia 9400m graphics unit. The main improvement will be watching video and gaming (which have been a long time poor spot for netbooks). You can see how this improves performance and options in the images below (courtesy of netbookchoice.com)

There will be significant improvement in 3D performance and HD video.

The S12 will also come with Lenovo’s expanded VeriFace facial recognition technology which will make logging in a snap by recognizing the user’s face. Internet connection is brilliant with built-in wifi, an option for a 3G card, an ethernet cable and bluetooth.

Although it has large screen and keyboard, the S12 is still very portable by being thin and light, weighing at just 1.4 kg (with the 3-cell battery) and 1.55kg (with the 6-cell battery).
Pricing should also be reasonable at around £360.
