Lenovo IdeaPad S9e Review

The Lenovo IdeaPad S9e is one of the smaller netbooks, having just an 8.9 inch screen. Most people still prefer these sub-9 inch netbooks as this is the main reason for them purchasing one, i.e. portability. It is tiny, measuring 25.0 cm(W) x 18.3 cm(D) x 2.75 cm(H) and weighs just 1.2kg’s. However Lenovo have managed to fit in a 85% full size keyboard, so fast typing should’nt be an issue.

It is quite cheap, at less than £200 (at the time of writing), and so value for money is excellent. There is a good 1GB of RAM, and a decent 80GB hard drive, which is still plenty of storage if you are selective.

The Lenovo S9e comes with Windows XP preloaded as well as Media Adapter which allows you to easily transfer your photo’s and digital files over to it.

The main negative point of the Lenovo S9e IdeaPad is the poor battery life, which is reported to only last 2.5 hrs. This is only terrible of course in comparison to the latest netbooks, which boast upwards of 5 hrs battery life.
It has wireless and wired networking, as well as bluetooth. To be truelly portable though you should pair it with a USB Modem, and of course there is bluetooth.

This is a starter netbook and for the price, a steal.

i just got one of these for $199 (us) with a 4gb solid state drive and 512 meg ram. the suse linux it came with was very clunky and not especially targeted toward this netbook, but i installed ubuntu 9.04 netbook remix on it and now it rocks. this was about the most painless linux install ever and everything worked (wireless, webcam, display, everything) i had to manually add flash support, but that was painless. it runs like a champ and feels like a quality piece of hardware, not at all junky. the 512 meg is no limitation at all for ubuntu but if it turns out to be, then memory can be boosted to 1 gig for around $25 (us). when you buy it online the sellers are not clear as to whether or not it has bluetooth, but mine does (although i haven’t tested that for lack of any other bluetooth peripherals). i have nothing bad at all to say about this once the provided os is replaced with ubuntu netbook remix.

I bought my Lenovo S9e last month. Everything is perfect until one day, when I try to use it, I connected the power adapter cable to it and the battery charging indicator is not responding. It means it’s not charging. I removed the battery pack and tried to power it direct trough its power cable but still it doesn’t work. I can’t use the net book anymore. Is there somebody here who can help? Thank you.

    Hi Mhelter,

Have you contacted the supplier from whom you bought the netbook?
